Quote hANTI HUMAN-TRAFFICKING EDUCATION IN ZAMBIA WorldVenture Photographer 2018
SKILLS: Strategic Marketing. Photography. Videography. Interviewing. Storytelling. Editing.
CHALLENGE
Join Michelle, Adrienne, and Kristin in Zambia to capture photos and video of an anti human-trafficking training workshop taking place for 14 local women.
Specific project/marketing needs were unknown prior to arrival.
Honor religious and cultural backgrounds while providing training on uncomfortable situations and critical conversations and capturing the attendees experience.
ACTION
Sat down with the workshop leadership team to talk strategy and scope objectives, creating a checklist for each video or use case, from its core purpose and storyline, to which individuals needed to be featured and how, to specific shots and soundbites, to ratio of video/photography.
Introduced myself to all of the workshop attendees, explaining what I would be doing and why, what to expect, how they would be engaged, and answered questions.
Chose a lens where I could get photos from a distance to create comfort for individuals while still appearing close in frame.
Engaged attendants in a personal and empathetic manner that honored the vulnerability of the topic and helped ease and empower the women into comfortably sharing their own stories on camera.
Leveraged a variety of camera lenses to stay on the periphery of the experience as to not interrupt or distract, capturing authentic, lively and emotionally moving interpersonal interactions that still feel up close and intimate.
Took more than 2000 photos of the workshop, individual attendees, and surrounding area and community, ultimately selecting and editing the 250 best for use in the videos and otherwise.
RESULT
60 top-notch photos that tell the story of their curriculum and empowerment of attendees to be used in all manner of mediums, from social media promotion to educational materials.
An educational video outlining the workshop’s curriculum and importance to be used for fundraising, marketing and grant proposal efforts.
A biographical video of the program’s leader for thought leadership and fundraising purposes.
Extra photos were taken for a Rotary Club in Oregon to see why a well needed to be fixed and showing the difference that it would make in the community.
Also, shared a small library of finished photos with One Collective so that they can have some updated materials showing what projects they have going on there and how they are making a difference in the community. ere

JORDAN SEMINARY DEGREE PROGRAM PROMO
WorldVenture Videographer 2017
SKILLS: Videography. Interviewing. Storytelling. Schedule & Relationship Management.
Cross-Cultural and Language Communication. Equipment Repair. Agility. Editing.
CHALLENGE
Create a video to showcase an Arabic language, adult seminary degree program.
The program is online, with students all over the world and no real classroom to speak of.
Some students only spoke Arabic, which I don’t speak. So finding people to translate and creating subtitles.
Phrasing is very key when talking about topics and people in that region of the world. It was sometimes hard to come up with the correct way of saying something as to not hurt anyone's feelings or create any feelings of animosity between people.
ACTION
Met the man that started the seminary years ago, and he mentioned how he wanted Kelsey to go to Jordan to create some media for fundraising for the seminary.
Arrived in Jordan and met with the degree program’s leader, quickly building rapport.
Was given a very specific location, shot, soundbite and interview list to follow by their communications person, Kris Kuhlman.
Worked through the checklist, setting up and cranking out the scenes and shots, asking for re-dos as needed.
While shoot was tightly scheduled, I made sure to add in a few days for extra time “just in case.”
Interviewed a group of students in-person about why the program matters to them and how they use it in their everyday lives.
Became absorbed in the shoots, tracking key individuals to capture key moments - asking for a pause or re-frame as needed to make sure each shot requested was quality.
RESULT
When a camera broke, I was not able to fix it myself, but also because I had planned contingency time and gear I had an extra DSLR body with me, and we were actually able to go more places than we had originally planned and captured some great extra footage.
A video filled with heart-warming testimonials of the power of being able to learn, in your native language, how to make a theological impact on your community.
The vocabulary and phrasing used was intentional and created a video that could be seen and used in several countries without any issues.
Content snippets to be used on social media and other marketing materials to raise money for the program so more students can attend.
BEING CANDID IN INDIA
WorldVenture Freelance Photographer 2013
SKILLS: Planning. Strategic Observation. Photography. Framing. Multi-Cultural Communication.
CHALLENGE
Capture the overall trip of the design team going to India for documentation images as well as images for marketing materials.
Individuals I was working with were not always used to being in front of a camera, making posing individuals for photos difficult for me and uncomfortable for the subject.
ACTION
Worked with my employer to get a feel of the trip and the kinds of shots she was looking to get from it.
This trip was at the beginning of my photography career and I was lacking in options for lenses but I quickly learned that if I possibly wanted a photo of something or someone, it needed to start with a heartfelt interaction first.
Also captured many candid, interpersonal exchanges from a distance that would never have been possible from close up due to the lack of comfort around cameras as well as close up shots due to personable and authentic interactions.
RESULT
Not only got the requested list of shots for marketing materials that felt natural and captured the real energy and experience, but also came out with some exceptional shots that told the whole story of what the organization is about and selling - including this photo of the business owners laughing together with one of her employees with a product in their hand.
