A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON PORTRAITS

SKILLS: Learning & Development. Research. Applied Learning. Thought Leadership. Open-Mindedness.
CHALLENGE
Continue to grow my skills as a photographer after having left a formal education program.
ACTION
Follow many travel photographers, professional photographers, camera makers and style icons to stay up-to-date on trends, technology and overall interesting approaches I could leverage myself, both from technical photography to how to leave no trace as you capture in the wilderness.
Came across a series of portraits (by Joey Lawence) of Kurdish fighters in the Middle East, where I could feel how much effort went into positioning every single individual and how much it truly told a story in a way I hadn’t considered.
Challenged myself to capture more evocative portraits and landscapes in every city I visited as I traveled to dozens of countries, trying to get one to two really solid images.
RESULT
My perspective on portraits and what they can be has evolved tremendously. There is so much more that can be done than the traditional family and business photos while not vearing into the 100% candid, energy and emotion filled captures I had once preferred.
I’ve gained an eye for storytelling portrait opportunities, connecting with strangers as I tour cities to capture fleeting moments.
